Information Handled by the App
Student Driver may store information you enter, including:
- The driver's name, state, and configured hour goals.
- Saved supervisors and cars.
- Drive dates, start and end times, duration, night-driving minutes, and optional mileage.
- Optional start, stop, and checkpoint descriptions, plus available start and stop GPS coordinates.
- Road, weather, traffic, skill, and note information.
- Backup and report files that you choose to create.
On-Device Storage
Your driving records are stored in the app's private storage on your device. Student Driver does not require an account and does not upload this information to a developer-operated server.
Reports and Backups
Manual reports and backups are created only when you request them. You choose where to save or share these files using iOS.
If you enable automatic backups, Student Driver saves JSON backup files to the Files or iCloud Drive folder you select after saved changes. The app retains the five most recent automatic backups in that folder. You can change or remove the selected folder at any time.
Files stored with iCloud Drive or another Files provider are also subject to that provider's terms and privacy practices.
JSON backups contain the full log, including names, precise endpoint locations, notes, and Recently Deleted records. The app does not password-encrypt these portable files. Keep them in a private location. Report options let you omit names, locations, and notes; those details are omitted by default in version 1.0.3 and later.
Before restoring, the app validates a private staged copy and keeps one previous-log recovery snapshot on the device. The snapshot is replaced by the next restore and removed when the app is uninstalled. Temporary staged imports are removed after confirmation or cancellation; temporary exports are removed when the export completes or is replaced.
Location
Student Driver requests location permission when you start a live drive or enable background recording in Settings. During recording, location updates estimate mileage. Location is optional; without access, the app can still record time, and you can enter locations and miles manually.
Background Location During Live Drive is off by default. When enabled and permitted by iOS, recording can continue while the phone is locked. Tracking stops when the drive is stopped or canceled. With background recording off, keep the app in the foreground for mileage capture. Force-quitting the app interrupts recording; relaunching preserves recorded miles and marks unobserved gaps rather than estimating a route through them.
Saved drives retain available endpoint GPS coordinates separately from readable addresses. The app does not save a full route history. A protected on-device recovery file keeps the active drive's accumulated distance, start coordinate, and last accepted GPS fix until saving completes or you cancel the drive. Automatic night detection, if enabled, estimates sunset-to-sunrise minutes using a drive coordinate.
After saving, Student Driver can send unresolved endpoint coordinates to Apple's geocoding service to obtain readable addresses while the app has execution time. This may require a network connection. Addresses can be resolved later, including during another drive; address lookup does not block Start or Stop. Apple's services are subject to Apple's privacy practices.
CarPlay, Apple Watch, and Live Activities
The paired Apple Watch and CarPlay can display drive status and control recording through the iPhone. Live Activities display drive status and elapsed time on the Lock Screen or Dynamic Island. The driver name is hidden there by default in version 1.0.3 and later and can be enabled in Settings. Consider who can see these screens.
Data Collection and Tracking
The developer does not receive your driving records or location data. Student Driver does not include advertising, third-party analytics, cross-app tracking, or data-broker integrations. The developer does not sell personal information.
Children and Families
Student Driver is intended for families and supervised drivers. Because the app does not use developer accounts or a developer-operated data service, the developer does not knowingly collect personal information from children through the app. A parent or guardian should supervise the app's use when appropriate.
Retention and Deletion
In version 1.0.3 and later, deleting a drive moves it to Recently Deleted and excludes it from progress and reports. It remains there until you restore it, permanently delete it, or uninstall the app. Existing backup, recovery, and exported copies are not revoked when you delete a record; you control those files separately.
When automatic backup is enabled, Student Driver keeps the five most recent automatic backups in the selected folder. You can delete those files using the Files app.
Security
Student Driver relies on the iOS sandbox, device protections, and the security provided by your selected Files provider. Recovery and temporary files use protection compatible with an unlocked-since-boot device so an authorized drive can be saved while locked. This is not a substitute for a strong device passcode or private backup storage. No storage method can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
Changes to This Policy
This policy may be updated when the app's features or privacy practices change. The effective date at the top of this page identifies the latest version.
